Cold showers....rain

I mention it to everyone I come across eventually, I love my Amazon Kindle. I'm not making comparisons between it and any other E-reader, I'm just saying that I love the convenience of it. I marvel at the miracle of it, in one of the most rugged and technologically isolated places on Earth I have access to thousands upon thousands of books of all types, millions of published documents, even Blackjack and Hold 'Em Poker. It's just so cool to be flying around Afghanistan at 8,000 feet and I can grab my Kindle and read anything from the Bible to Dave Barry.

I've got somewhere in the neighborhood of 150 books on my Kindle and I was just reading in one the suggestion of taking a few less-than-common ideas and applying them to furthering my health. It mentioned the benefits of exertion while exposed to colder temperatures, such as in a pool while swimming. While I don't have any swimming pools around here I did do some further reading on the subject and more than a few doctors were talking about the benefits of occasional ice baths or cold showers. I started with the cold showers, whoa! At first it sucked so bad, my breath would just get taken away and it felt horrible. Then I started gradually turning the water temp down until it was as cold as it could get, that was a lot easier to manage. And surprisingly enough, I'm now loving it! While a hot shower still feels amazing and relaxing, a cold shower is absolutely exhilarating and I've noticed that on my cold shower nights, I sleep like a baby. I mentioned it to a friend of mine and she jokingly suggested that the cold served to alleviate the nighttime stress stemming from the self-imposed suppression of my naturally raging sex drive lol. I personally lean more towards some of the physiological explanations offered by the doctors and scientists behind the idea.

No matter the cause, I just thought I'd share. I definitely recommend it to anyone, just start it slow and easy and push your comfort zone gradually or else the shock will totally turn you off to it and ruin the experience.

In other news, while the winter snows have begun to pound northern Afghanistan, the floods have once again struck the south with a vengeance. I love the rain and even though it's cancelled our flights for the past 2 days, it has been a lot of fun to get out and have the chance to splash around and get all good and muddy. It has been an exhausting few weeks, while the past 2 days have been a bit of a reprieve from actually flying, it is still tough to get up early and go through the motions of flight preparation and then spend 3 or 4 hours sitting in the rain waiting for word on cancellation. We haven't had a day off in several weeks now and it doesn't look like we're getting one anytime soon.

The next 2 days should be clear enough to fly and then another weather front is supposed to pass through. Yay. Ah well, here I am rambling about the weather again. I'm tired. I took a few nice pictures, but I can't wait until my nice camera gets here. I just bought a Sony Alpha A55 on my sister's recommendation.

The mountains bordering the Arghandab River Valley.
The Arghandab reservoir is just visible in the top right
corner of the picture.

Getting ready to descend into the valley on the approach
to Mizan, about 20 minutes flying time west of the city of Qalat
