The end of the #@%*!!! world!!!

Well I got some bad news today, terrible news actually. I really didn’t quite know what to do with myself when I heard. I normally don’t get worked up about anything unless it’s something urgent, like somebody’s bleeding all over or something. I remember a few years ago I was going about 50 mph too fast around a wicked curve that lead out to the village where I lived in Germany. My car hit some gravel and did a couple of 360s on the narrow two-lane road before flying off the elevated shoulder down a 20 foot incline. It made a few more 360s while flying through the air and landed about 30 feet away from the road, it stopped moving when the trunk was impaled by a big tree stump that was angled towards the road. My friend was in the car with me at the time and afterwards he thought it was too funny that as we were flying through the air I casually looked over and said, “We’re dead, man.”

Autobiographical statement behind me, back on topic:

Today I was doing my little routine of browsing through the news and the other places that I read for entertainment when I saw the headline that stopped my heart…Mandy Moore is engaged!

My Mandy Moore “thing” started years ago when I happened to wander into a free movie, I forget exactly what the circumstances were, but there I was. It turned out that it was this total chick flick, A Walk to Remember. Cheesy as hell but I grew up with 2 older sisters and my mom who just loved all of the old musicals. I complained a lot but nonetheless I still have a million Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly songs floating through my head. With no effort on my part over the years I developed a tremendous appreciation for music and singing, not that I’m much of a musician and I know that I can’t sing worth a damn haha. But I really do appreciate talent when I see it, and that Mandy Moore girl had some pipes.

Fast-forward a few years and I’m in Afghanistan running this little airfield out in the middle of nowhere. The folks running the post office were inundated with blank holiday cards that people from the states sent for the troops to send out to their families. They were getting ready to throw a whole bunch out so I took a couple hundred and together with the guys in my shop, we bought a membership to a celebrity addresses website and we mailed about 300 Christmas cards. We hit everybody up from the Unabomber to Clint Eastwood to Britney Spears. We only got about 10 or 15 replies and most of those were just canned responses saying “join my fan club” or something like that. But Mandy Moore’s office sent a couple of really nice big pictures and a nice note thanking us for being over here. I’ve been a die-hard fan ever since. Until this…

I know they’re having mashed potatoes and egg-rolls for lunch today, I think I’m gonna go on a bender. If anybody needs me, I’ll be stuffing my face!

  1. Sorry to hear that Mandy Moore is engaged although I have a strong feeling it wouldn't have worked out between you too. My crush was always Matthew Mcconaughey. When he knocked up that chick my heart sank as well. Anyways, I think I remember you actually but you must have left just after I got there. I remember Barry Price too. Remember him? Do you talk to them anymore?
