Today I got a funny reminder of what was at the time an extremely scary experience. I had a copy of this picture saved away somewhere but I couldn't find it until somebody just emailed it to me.
The chauvinists in my shop back in Afghanistan liked to say that it was a perfect example of why women shouldn't drive cars or airplanes, but I prefer to think of it as a proof that there is the occasional girl out there as dumb as us.
This girl was was flying a DC-8 for DHL and we were running a turbine airstart cart that provides enough air pressure for the plane to start its engines. The normal procedure for any aircraft is to wait until the guy with the marshaling wands says its ok to go. Well that just wouldn't do for her. As soon as she started the #4 engine, she powered on up and broadsided everyone's favorite truck. Quite the experience.
At the very least, its another blessing for me to count, and more than a few more gray hairs on my poor mom's head if she ever saw the picture.
