I’m sitting in front of the computer waiting for some stuff to download and right now as I type I am hearing the most lovely sounds that I have heard in quite awhile; real honest thunder! I was in the shower when I first heard it and I thought it was mortars hitting, that’s how hard it shook my hooch. After a minute I poked my head out of my door and saw the silhouette of the inky black thunderclouds as massive bolts of lightning flashed across the sky. And now the rain is just beginning to sound on the roof; how great thou art indeed. This is the magic of the season for me, when it first begins.
This morning didn’t start out quite so pleasantly. I woke up early and went through my usual routine and then got on the bus to work. Halfway there someone starts calling out over the radio, “We’re receiving indirect fire! Cease operations! Repeat, cease operations!…” BOOM! BaBOOM! And the bus kept rolling along as the unique twangs of BB King’s “The Thrill is Gone” played in my headphones. Indeed.
And the fun continued after we got to work. Some genius decided to install a loudspeaker inside of our building that’s wired to the giant voice so every time a shell hits anywhere near us we have to listen to a full minute of a screeching automated recording that warns “INCOMING! INCOMING!” and then proceeds to mumble all sorts of advice about taking cover and being vigilant for UXOs.
But the rain keeps pounding harder and harder, just this 10 minutes so far has made up for the whole seemingly endless heat and misery of the summer. I LOVE IT! In 5 more minutes I’m gonna lay down and I guarantee that I’ll be asleep in a matter of minutes, dreaming those peaceful “rain on the roof” dreams. Good night, world!
